Brief Overview of Madama Butterfly

Giacomo Puccini's Madama Butterfly is a classic favorite in the world of opera. Written late in Puccini's career, the classical music masterpiece features a complex and compelling narrative about love, honor and betrayal that has captured audiences for over 100 years.

it is an originally two-act (now a days performed as a three act) opera set in Japan, specifically Nagasaki and concerns the ill-fated love between an American Lieutenant and a young Japanese Geisha. Butterfly, the young geisha, becomes deeply devoted to her newly married husband Pinkerton, the American sailor. After leaving for three years, trouble ensues as Pinkerton returns with his new American wife.

Puccini's score for Madama Butterfly is described as some of the most beautiful music ever written for an opera, showing his remarkable compositional skill. As with many of his works, he makes use of a colossal orchestra throughout - from full on brass to delicate woodwinds

It's no wonder that Madama Butterfly stands as one of Puccini's most beloved works to this day. Fans of classical music have drawn mad inspiration from the melodrama, owing much of its success to its stirring music, thoughtful characters and dramatic plot lines.

Staged at countless locations worldwide to enthusiastic applause, Madama Butterfly perpetually continues to captivate music aficionados all around the globe.

Where did we see it?

We recently saw Madama Butterfly during the season opening of the Palm Beach Opera at the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts. It was performed during the weekend of the Jan. 20 - Jan. 22. We attended the opening night on the 20th to a very well attended crowd, numbering over a thousand.

With a stellar cast to bring Puccini's masterpiece to life, we were captivated throughout the performance as we were guided through the heartbreaking story of Madama Butterfly accompanied by some of the most renowned pieces of classical music. We’re looking forward to attending more operas at the Kravis Center in the future!

Set Design and Costumes

Puccini's Madama Butterfly is famed for its stirring combination of music, set design and costumes.

These elements of the opera create a wonderfully vivid atmosphere that transports the audience to a traditional Japanese home at the turn of the 19th century. The combination of traditional kimonos with western attire and luxurious décor communicates Puccini’s vision effectively and adds another layer to an already powerful plot.

The stage was set and decorated beautifully with the center focus of a traditional Japanese house overlooking the Nagasaki Harbor. We were wonderfully impressed by the attention to detail made with the set design from the foliage, flowers, horizon vista, Japanese proportioned architecture, and iconic zen style of the interior.

Meanwhile the costuming decisions convey a mix of tragedy and beauty within Madama Butterfly's signature Japanese kimono. The immortal story contains moments of both joy and sorrow - interpreted by different fabrics in this costume - ranging from lightly shimmering silk to heavier brocade to capture the nuances in emotion which make this production unforgettable.

We were very impressed with Palm Beach Opera’s importance on conveying the culture accurately by working with a consultant from a local Japanese garden and museum - the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.

The strong set design and costumes is a strong key to making Puccini’s Madama Butterfly renowned in the classical music world today.

Favorite Parts of the Music

One favorite part of Madama Butterfly’s music composition is the recurring love theme that begins with two strings and builds up to a full orchestra as the climax fills up the stage. Another memorable moment is when Pinkerton, madama Butterfly’s ill-fated husband, leaves her in utter rejection -- a somber musical discourse gives voice to madama Butterfly’s grief.

Its aria Un bel di showcases Puccini's incredible talent for lyricism and drama. There is some levity given to the opera with Puccini’s reference use of the Star Spangled Banner in relation to the American sailor Pinkerton. We giggled during the first time it was used as it felt out of place in the Japanese set world of Madama Butterfly, but it gives life to the theme of globalization that is crucial to the opera.

With these musically creative elements amalgamated into Madama Butterfly’s soundscape, Puccini succeeded in creating an emotionally stirring masterpiece for all audiences.
